USE TEXTURE IN YOUR PROJECT WITH SMUDGY ANTICS - week 2

Welcome back for week 2 of the fortnight challenge with Smudgy Antics!

For this challenge we want to see more than just paper, glue and ink.  We want to see TEXTURE and lots of it!

We want you guys and gals to create projects that make us want to reach through the computer screen and touch everything we see!  The more creative the better!  We love it when you guys and gals think outside of the box and make something with that extra "WOW" factor!

I went WAY out of my comfort zone this week and made my first canvas.  I had no clue what I was doing, other than adding as much texture as I could.  Heck, I'm not even sure if I like it yet.  I may have to look at it for a few days before deciding whether or not it's a keeper.

The first part of my process was picking the stamps I wanted to use.  Smeared Ink red rubber of course!  Using some techniques I learned in Andy Skinner's workshop "The Outcasts", I made casts of a few stamps.  I broke  one, but I still had the cool skull from "Quoth the Raven" and one of the hearts from Smeared Ink's "Heart Wings" rubber set.  These items can only be purchased from Smeared Ink's Rubber Club.

I started out with some canvas board.  I used molding paste and whatnot to build up texture on my canvas.  I also used stamps from Smeared Ink's "Urban Decay" rubber set and pressed them into the molding paste.  The trick with this is to use a thin layer of molding paste and have a glass of water nearby and rinse your stamp after each impression you make.  This cleans out whatever paste or paint that gets into the deeply etched grooves of the stamp so you can continue to get nice impressions.

I attached my plaster casts of the skull, heart, and flourishes with Spackle paste (joint filler) as I ran out of my little sample jar of molding paste.  In hindsight, I would have attached these pieces at the end AFTER painting my textured canvas.  I used a variety of Deco Art Paints.  In some spots I had watered down black paint and allowed it to drip down the canvas. This was the anxiety producing point for a control freak like myself!  Hell, this whole project had me on edge!  I felt out of control the whole time, but it was fun...and messy.

I couldn't seem to find a color or a finish I liked for the wings of the heart or the flourishes, so at the end I added Stickles to them.  I know, grunge and Stickles really don't go together, but what the hell....I did it!

Thank you if you read this massive book i just wrote.  Please head over to Smudgy Antics to get inspiration from the rest of the DT gals.  Be sure to play along with the texture challenge.  You have until midnight on Saturday the 15th PST.

~ Cheers ~
