The Burtonesque Dolls Challenge #5

Time again for another kick-ass challenge from The Burtonesque Dolls.  They have weekly challenges so feel free to join in the fun.  I started playing along with their challenges a couple of weeks ago and am totally hooked!  Being a Smeared Ink DT member, I love all dark, alternative, and Gothic art. The Burtonesque Dolls is a good fit for me.

Here's a blurb from the Dolls' site:  "And now, on with the show. For this week's challenge we are taking a stroll around Sleepy Hollow! Your Burtonesque mission is to create a card or project with Sleepy Hollow-ish scenery.. think funky trees, pumpkins, and elements from these photos and put your hero/heroine in that scene."

Here is my take on Challenge #5.  I didn't get as dark as "Sleepy Hollow", but I did use trees and a twilight sky for inspiration.  My scanner didn't pick-up the colors accurately.  The sky has more purple and looks duskier IRL, but I still like the way it looks.  The trees were made using Smeared Ink's "Shadow Thingies" rubber stamp set as were the flowers and swirling leaves.  I think they go perfectly with my illustration!  The focal image is a new one for me.  Say hello to "Pinky".  She is a digital stamp from Tiddly Inks and is oh so cute and fun to color.  Cute and Goth!  I totally love this image!

My background sky is my version of watercolor.  I spritzed 140# watercolor paper with water, smeared various distress inks randomly, pad directly to paper, and then spritzed again with water to let the flowing ink work its magic.  I did slight blending with a blending stick, however I would recommend a brush as the swab stick is a little too abrasive for the wet paper.  Being impatient, I dried the ink with a heat tool.  I used the same technique for the foreground.  A friend, Black Dragon, informed me that Distress reinkers can be drizzled into a palette and used like watercolors.  Of course I don't have reinkers, but when I get some you can be assured that I will give it a try!  The shadowing and details, as well as "Pinky" were colored with my ever-so-dry copic markers.  I must, MUST, get refills STAT!  What's up with me having absolutely NO refills on anything?!  Naturally, I'm waiting on a sale so if anyone can recommend a good place to buy I'd appreciate it!

Whew!  Sorry to talk your ears off, but I was so excited about my new inky technique and my new stamped images!  I just couldn't wait to share.  I'm pretty pleased with the outcome, even though I tend to be my own worst critic.  I hope you enjoy what you see.  Hopefully, I've inspired any lurkers to get involved, get creative, and get crafty.

Cheers!
